THE FAMILY COLLEGE · PRACTICAL FAMILY LEARNING

A thoughtful gift for parents.
Less clutter. More care.

A good family gift starts with the person receiving it. Would they welcome something to learn, something to enjoy together, or an hour when nobody needs them? The most impressive wrapping paper cannot answer that question for you.

At The Family College, we make short, humorous courses about preparing for parenthood, communicating as a family and growing through the next chapter. Our free Newbie level is open after sign-in. Paid course gifting is not open yet. You can share a course link as an invitation; it is not a purchased gift or an enrollment in someone else’s name.

Gifts for new parents: ask what would help

For a baby shower, adoption celebration or a new arrival, choose support that fits the family. Offer a meal at an agreed time, collect groceries from their list, or take care of a practical errand. Ask before visiting and make it easy to decline. “I can bring dinner on Thursday” is often easier to answer than “let me know if you need anything.”

If they enjoy learning together, send them Expecting, Together. It covers becoming a family through birth or adoption. The Nursery Is Not the Point offers a useful counterweight to the shopping list, while The Village, Assembled looks at asking for support.

Gifts for moms, dads and caregivers

For Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, birthdays or Christmas, match the gift to their interests. A quiet afternoon, a favorite activity or time together can feel more personal than another item for the cupboard. Include grandparents, single parents, foster parents and other caregivers in the conversation about who deserves a thank-you.

A course should feel like encouragement, never a performance review. Try “I thought we might enjoy this together” rather than “you need this.” The registrar strongly advises against attaching a list of improvement areas.

Family experience gifts: give them a choice

Offer two realistic options and agree on a date. A game afternoon at home may suit one family; another may prefer a walk or a shared meal. Consider energy, accessibility, schedules and travel before making a booking. A gift that creates more administration can quietly become homework.
